Weapons use the weapon bonus. Helms, chest armor and pants use the armor bonus. Rings and necklaces use the accessory bonus. The number of available sockets depends on the equipment slot.
Check an item’s equipment page for its socket limit. Upgrading a gem improves its bonuses, but the strongest choice still depends on your class, damage type and defensive needs.
